The Sacred Bee

There is little to investigate, one might think, about Utah's status as "the Beehive State." Most Latter-day Saints are familiar with the symbol of the beehive in Church history-- industry, thrift, cooperation. On October 11, 1881, an article in the Deseret News explained, “The hive and honey bees form our communal coat of arms... It is a significant representation of the industry, harmony, order and frugality of the people, and of the sweet results of their toil, union and intelligent cooperation.” And that is that. One might rightfully suppose. The beehive has been emblazoned on newel posts, bus tokens, business logos and etched windows throughout Utah for many generations. This is not surprising. But why is the hive on the doorknobs of the Salt Lake Temple? What has industry, thrift, and cooperation to do with the holy ordinances that take place therein, and why did the founders of the Church take care to include them in this structure? A few years ago, a national TV talk show performed an experiment to test a few American kids on their 'stranger smarts.' These kids were left at home alone, and with the parents' permission, they were approached at their front doors by an actor playing the part of a stranger. To the surprise of many parents, the 'stranger' not only got into their homes but was offered a child-guided tour of each room. When the children were interviewed thereafter, the breakdown was detected: kids knew not to let a stranger into the house, but they had no contingency plan for when a stranger, despite their best efforts, did get into the house. My Friend and Your Friend

A good man returned to God this week. He was my friend. We were not related, we had little daily interaction, and yet I call him my friend, above that of general acquaintance or collective pleasantry. I think many people in my church congregation feel the same way-- he was not a friend to all of us; he was a friend to each of us. Why would we feel this way about an elderly gentleman with whom many of us had limited association? With his passing, I have pondered that question. I know we all feel his loss quite personally. I can't speak for everyone, but something dawned on me this morning that helped me understand what Brother Richard Blackmer meant to me-- why he was my friend, and what that means.
